Students of Academic City University have claimed international recognition for their innovative sustainable packaging design, winning the 2026 WorldStar Global Packaging Award in the Sustainable Packaging category.
The winning project, Eco Haven Waakye Packaging, was developed by a team of students: Mohammed Yasin Abdul Wahab, Sarah Akpedze Amewu, and Jeremy Acquaah and stood out for its environmental focus, practicality, and global relevance.
The World Packaging Organisation (WPO), which organises the awards, praised the project as a prime example of next-generation talent driving innovation in sustainable packaging.
The WorldStar competition drew 246 entries from 90 educational institutions across 23 countries, highlighting the growing global emphasis on sustainable design solutions.
According to the WPO, the Academic City team’s project exemplifies excellence in both environmental responsibility and creative problem-solving on a global scale.
Speaking on the achievement, Ing. Lucy Agyepong, vice president for Institutional Advancement at Academic City University, commended the students for their commitment and creativity.
According to her, the achievement not only raises the profile of Ghanaian youth on the global stage but also reflects the university’s strong commitment to sustainability and industry collaboration.
“Their achievement shows what Ghanaian youth can achieve when given the right opportunities and support. It also inspires the next generation to think beyond boundaries,” she added.
The award adds to Academic City’s growing reputation for innovation. The university was recently first runner-up at the Royal Crown Packaging Competition, organised by Royal Crown Packaging Limited and the Institute of Packaging Ghana, underscoring its consistent competitive edge in real-world design challenges.
The Eco Haven Waakye Packaging project addresses environmental sustainability while preserving functionality, aligning with global trends toward eco-conscious consumer products.
Observers say such recognition not only boosts Ghana’s visibility in global innovation circles but also demonstrates the practical impact of nurturing youth creativity through institutional support and industry collaboration.
As the world increasingly prioritises sustainable solutions, Academic City University’s achievement signals that Ghanaian students are ready to compete and excel at the highest international levels, turning local ingenuity into globally celebrated innovation.
