Nigeria’s famed ‘Detty December’ season is in full swing, and cinemas nationwide are buzzing as Nollywood blockbusters pull in massive holiday crowds.
The festive period, which is known for its parties, reunions and high-energy celebrations, has turned into a fierce box office contest, with local films leading the charge.
Topping the charts is ‘Behind The Scenes,’ produced and co-directed by Nollywood powerhouse, Funke Akindele.
Released nationwide on December 12, 2025, following advance screenings and a London premiere, the film has smashed records. Distributed by FilmOne Entertainment, it grossed N512 million at the box office in just 12 days, making it the fastest Nollywood movie to hit N500 million and the highest-grossing Nollywood film of 2025 so far.

The drama unpacks relatable issues such as ‘black tax’ – the pressure on successful family members to financially support relatives – through the story of a wealthy philanthropist pushed to breaking point by constant demands.
It features a star-studded ensemble, including Scarlet Gomez in the lead, alongside Funke Akindele, Iyabo Ojo, Destiny Etiko, Tobi Bakre, Uzor Arukwe, Ini Dima-Okojie, Mr Macaroni, and Big Brother Naija stars Handi and Wanni.
Critics are divided over the movie. While some praise its commercial appeal and relatable story, others say it sticks to familiar Funke-filmmaking formulas. Yet, audiences have embraced it across Nigeria and Ghana. Celebrating the milestone, Akindele declared on social media: “This is what belief looks like.”
Adding to the competition is ‘Over Sabi Aunty,’ produced, directed by, and starring Toyin Abraham. Hitting cinemas on December 19, 2025, the comedy-drama follows an overzealous church usher whose meddling upends family relationships
The film boasts a strong cast, including Mike Ezuruonye, Efe Irele, Jemima Osunde, Queen Nwokoye, and Enioluwa Adeoluwa.
The title riffs on Abraham’s real-life nickname ‘Oversabi Aunty,’ earned at high-profile events such as Priscilla Ojo’s wedding.

These homegrown hits are not only dominating locally but also competing against international heavyweights. Hollywood blockbuster ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ opened with N87 million over its first weekend, drawing fans of epic visuals and action. Yet, Nollywood’s stars are holding strong, proving the power of culturally resonant stories during the holidays.
Adding anticipation is the upcoming ‘Colours of Fire,’ an epic drama from director, Niyi Akinmolayan (known for Lisabi), set for release on Christmas Day (today).
Produced by Anthill Studios and distributed by FilmOne, it promises high-stakes action, passion, and cultural depth with stars like Osas Ighodaro, Uzor Arukwe, Mercy Aigbe, and Gabriel Afolayan. The film’s teaser and first-look images have built huge excitement for a holiday spectacle.
With ‘Behind The Scenes’ setting new benchmarks, ‘Over Sabi Aunty’ bringing laughs and heart, and more releases on the horizon, Nollywood is delivering a festive cinematic feast. These films showcase the industry’s growth, blending entertainment with social commentary. They prove that when audiences believe in local stories, the box office responds. As Detty December continues, cinemas remain the place to be for celebration and spectacle.
