Abuja is calm but security is beefed up following the hosting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) which kicks off in the city tomorrow (Wednesday).

As at last Sunday, international delegates had started arriving Abuja, with courteous staff stationed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport to receive delegates and convey them to Sheraton Hotels, Abuja, the registration venue, amid tight security.

Security personnel were also seen at strategic places and on the roads. “I can see that the city is calm, with everybody going about their business, but there is fear outside there as if the city is engulfed” Kinyua M’Mbijjewe, Head of Corporate Affairs, Syngenta, from Kenya told BusinessDay.

Kinyua whose country, Kenya also experiences the atrocities of Shaaba, a similar group to Boko Haram, said the intentions of these militants is to put fear into citizens, businessmen and women and international investors.

“Countries should not allow them, if not economies of such countries will be greatly affected”, he said.

Other delegates in the bus including UK, Uganda, South Africa, USA conveying them to Sheraton also agreed that the activities of militants are anti-economic growth.

The organisers of the WEF last weekend stated that the forum would go ahead as planned but amid tight security.
