Valdis Dombrovskis, Vice President, European Commission, said Sunday’s referendum result “widens the gap” between Greece and the rest of the eurozone.
He said on Monday in Brussels that there was urgent need for all sides to work responsibly to resolve the situation.
Dombrovskis said if all sides were working seriously, “it will be possible to find a solution even in this very complicated situation”.
He said the commission was willing to continue talks with Greece but first required a mandate from the Eurogroup finance ministers.
Dombrovskis said the previous Eurogroup offer to consider restructuring Greek debt made in 2012 was not on the table anymore.
He said this was because it was conditioned on the successful conclusion of Greece’s bailout programme, which expired last week.
“I think there are going to be very few winners in this situation” Dombrovkis said, adding that the stability of the eurozone was not in question.
He said the bloc had all the tools necessary to prevent contagion and was ready to use them.
