The Borno State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has explained its decision to boycott the upcoming local government elections scheduled for Saturday, December 13, 2025.
In a statement issued to journalists in Maiduguri on Friday by Amos Adziba, the party’s State Publicity Secretary, the PDP said it would not participate, citing concerns over the legitimacy and fairness of the electoral process.

Adziba said, “The leading opposition party in Borno State, the PDP, has disclosed that it will not participate in the December 13, 2025, local government elections due to the high cost of expression of interest and nomination forms, as well as a lack of trust in the electoral body.”
The decision was reached at the party’s State Executive Committee (SEC) meeting held in Maiduguri, the state capital.
He added, “The PDP listed several reasons for its withdrawal from the elections, including a lack of trust in the Borno State Independent Electoral Commission (BOSIEC) and the All Progressives Congress (APC). The BOSIEC has not provided opposition parties with substantial reasons to build confidence in the credibility and fairness of the election.
“The PDP also alleged that the state electoral body is unmindful of the harsh prevailing economic challenges in the country by demanding high fees for expression of interest and nomination forms.”
Another concern raised by the party was the government’s failure to amend the Electoral Act to allow election results for councillor positions to be announced at the ward level and those for chairmanship positions at the local government headquarters.
“Since the government has not amended the Act, it means it will be business as usual for the APC to ambush other political parties with electoral fraud,” he added.
