Compact Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) are taking over Nigeria’s automotive landscape, as poor road conditions and the growing complexity of city life challenge the dominance of sedans.
More drivers are turning to smaller, more versatile SUVs that combine comfort with resilience.
According to Mordor Intelligence, SUVs already made up about 36.75 percent of the automotive market in Sub-Saharan Africa, by body style in 2024, and that share is expected to grow with a ~5.04% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) through 2030.
This means that more than one in every three cars sold in Sub-Saharan Africa in 2024 was an SUV, and the number of these vehicles on the roads isn’t slowing down, as sales are projected to keep rising by about 5 percent every year through 2030.

The compact SUV segment has become a battleground for manufacturers from Japan, Korea, China, and the U.S., each offering models tailored to different needs, from fuel efficiency to off-road capability.
Suzuki has positioned itself in this space with models such as the Grand Vitara, Jimny, and Fronx, vehicles that appeal to buyers looking for fuel efficiency, urban drivability, or rugged off-road capability.
With petrol prices on the rise, Suzuki’s Grand Vitara, for instance, reportedly covers up to 23 kilometres per litre, making it one of the most fuel-efficient options in its class.
Suzuki’s approach to compact SUVs blends Japanese engineering with practical features. The Grand Vitara, available in GL and GLX trims, offers a modern dashboard with touchscreen display and a 360-degree camera, features that enhance both safety and driving confidence.
Then there’s a rugged 4×4 that is built for Nigeria’s toughest terrains, known as the Jimny. Its compact size belies its off-road capabilities, making it a favourite among adventure seekers and rural drivers alike.
The Fronx brings a touch of urban sophistication, with connectivity features and a sleek design that doesn’t sacrifice fuel efficiency, for those who prefer city driving.

With a ground clearance of 210mm, a 1.5L engine, and an automatic transmission, the Grand Vitara is designed to handle both city potholes and country roads.
Its 45-litre fuel tank means fewer refuelling stops, and its five-seat capacity makes it a practical choice for families and professionals alike.
Suzuki by CFAO, the brand’s authorised distributor in Nigeria, offers a three-year or 100,000-kilometre warranty and maintains a network of dealerships with genuine spare parts beyond Lagos.
The company is running a September promotion that combines a discounted purchase price with an all-expense-paid trip to Nairobi, Kenya.
