Passengers injured as train derails in Lagos

An unspecified number of passengers are feared seriously injured as train derailed in around Mangoro area of Lagos on Thursday morning.

The derailment was said to have occurred at about 7:15am. The train was coming from Iju enroute Ebute Metta via Oshodi with full capacity passengers when it veered off the tracks.

Findings revealed that the train derailed as a result of faulty tracks at the level crossing which has been reported by LASTMA men in the area and was noted for pending engineering works later tonight.

BusinessDay gathered that no life was lost but information at the scene from the bystanders has it that the wounded victims were rushed to nearby hospitals for medical first aid.

Efforts are currently on ground to evacuate the derailed coaches as the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) crane was quickly despatched to the scene from Lagos Island.

First responder emergency agencies of Lagos state and federal governments were seen at the scene making frantic efforts to help evacuate the injured.

They include LASEMA, Fire Service, Police, Rapid Response Squad (RRS), LASAMBUS, FRSC, RRS and LASTMA, among others.

Recovery operation still ongoing by the officials of the Nigeria Railway Corporation.
