In a message sent to customers, MTN, Nigeria’s biggest mobile phone network, announced that “some” data tariffs will be increased from December 1.

The step according to the MTN message was to “reflect the new rates set by the NCC operators.”

Although the new rates set by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) are yet to be made public by the regulatory agency, a source who claim to be knowledgeable on the matter had revealed to an online social platform that the NCC had mandated all mobile providers to raise data rates.

The increase, the source revealed, will mean 500MB will now go for N1,000.
