Kano state governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has set ablaze unwholesome products confiscated by the state Consumer Protection Council worth over N10 million.
The items include cartons of chewing gums, biscuits and assorted confectionery products, were destroyed at the premises of the Kano Command of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA in Kano.
Governor Ganduje described the seizure of the items as another major step in safe guarding public health in the state.
“You can imagine how many people would have been affected if these products were allowed be consumed and not seized”, the governor stated, noting that traders who market such products do not have good intentions for the citizens.
He noted that the items were confiscated in one of the markets, Singer market in Kano city, with the support of the market leaders.
Governor Ganduje urged market leaders across the state to assist the government in ensuring that only worthy products are sold to the public.
While commending the leadership of Singer market for a job well done, the governor enjoined other market leaders to emulate them by ensuring that no adulterated, substandard or expired product is sold in their markets.
He lamented that despite the fact that the government is spending huge sums of money in maintaining public health, unscrupulous citizens are bent on thwarting government’s efforts, stressing that despite being a commercial center, his administration will not allow Kano to become a center of illicit drugs and worthless products.
In his remarks, the chairman of Singer Market Traders Association, Uba Yakasai advised the state government to ensure that those found guilty of selling unwholesome products in any market in the state face the full wrath of the law.
In their separate remarks, the State NDLEA Commander, Alhaji Hamza Umar and the Acting Executive Secretary, Kano Consumer Protection Council, Ghali Sule thanked the state government for working closely with their agencies to rid the state of illicit drugs and bad products, hoping the spirit would remain alive.
