The Kano State House of Assembly has recommended the establishment of a mobile court to prosecute tax defaulters in the state.

This was part of recommendations of the House Committee on Finance on the amended Kano State Revenue Administrative Law, 2010, presented before the Assembly on Wednesday by the committee’s chairman, Mohammed Zakari.

Zakari, a member representing Tarauni Constituency, said the mobile court would also prosecute prospective tax evaders who tried to test the will of the amended law.

He said tax collection in the state would focus mainly on companies and major business establishments.

Zakari said that the state government, in its efforts to embark on massive revenue collection, had granted an autonomous status to the State Internal Revenue Board.

He said the autonomous status would give the board the opportunity to retain seven per cent of the revenue collected, while the state government would have the remaining.

The legislator said that the issue of multiple taxes had been addressed as part of the recommendation of the report.

Zakari said the state revenue board would spearhead the entire revenue collection on behalf of the local governments in the state.

He said that the revenue administrative law would assist in generating more funds for the state which would assist in mitigating the effects of current economic challenges in the state.

The Speaker, Kabiru Rurum, after a thorough debate on the bill unanimously adopted the report.
