Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State has challenged the management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to look inwards and produce uniforms for Corp Members in Aba, stating that they would not get any better quality than the ones made in town.
He stressed that the current quality of uniforms worn by Corps Members in the country would be improved upon by Aba tailors and at a competitive price, and appealed to the management of the service to produce their kits in Aba.
The Governor threw this challenge Tuesday, in his office, while receiving in audience, the new State Coordinator of NYSC, Bona Fasakin, who led the leadership of the agency in the State on a courtesy call on the Governor.
“As a scheme that showcases our young people, the NYSC Scheme must lead the way in mainstreaming the ingenuity of our youths,” the governor said.
The Governor welcomed the new State Coordinator and assured her of the readiness of his administration to continue to support the scheme, which according to him, remains one of the platforms for strengthening the unity of the country.
He assured that he would look into the long list of requests presented by the State Coordinator with a view to resolving them as quickly as possible.
The Governor stated that he had already instructed his Special Adviser on Works, Richard Nwala to do a thorough feasibility study on how the state government could intervene to improve facilities at the State Permanent Orientation Camp at Umunna, in Bende Local Government Area (LGA).
Fasakin told the Governor that she was in his office to formally present herself as the new head of the NYSCin the State and to thank the Governor for the cordial relationship existing between the Service and the State Government, as well as appeal for the intervention of the Governor in some critical areas of need, especially as it concerns the upgrade of infrastructure at their camp.
She pledged the continued support and cooperation of the Agency with the State Government, especially through the use of Corps Members in taking programmes of the state government to rural areas.
