FG inaugurate committee to address security concerns in colleges

In determined move to address concerns of security concerns in Nigeria education system,the federal government on Monday inaugurated a central planning committee on security education for Nigeria colleges.

Adamu Adamu, minister of education while inagurating the committee in Abuja said the nation’s insecurity has heightened over the years ,pointing out that it is more worrisome as the educational institution have become the targets of attack.

Adamu said:”Over the past decade, Nigeria has generally grown more insecure due to ethno-religious crisis and Boko Haram insurgency in the north, the most worrisome fact is that our education institutions have become targets” .

Speaking on the committee’s terms of reference,the Minister said,the committee is to oversee the security awareness and justice foundation with responsibility of training head of schools on how to deal with security challenges around the school environment.

Adamu pointed out that insecurity in schools is not peculiar to Nigeria alone adding that there is need for partnership between the government and stakeholders in curbing security challenges.

“It must be mentioned that insecurity is not a problem unique to Nigeria but the difference between similar incidences in other countries is how effectively they are managed . Also oartnership is indispensable in curbing security challenges, government cannot do it alone, while the government provide an enabling environment for learning, other stakeholders must be vigilant and proactive in combating insrances of insecurity in Nigeria.

In his response,Mike Mbama Okiro, Chairman of the Central planning committee said that the security awareness and justice foundation is a non governmental body designed to educate teenagers in Nigeria colleges, with a view of making them conscious of their environment .

He explained that according to the global terrorism index, insurgents and terrorist regularly feast on the recruitment and training of children into terrorists organizations.

He said “According to the global terrorism index, insurgents and terrorists regularly feast on the recruitment and conscription of children into terrorists organizations, who are trained to carryout acts that are unethical to social and moral existence in our societies” .
