President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has donated N400 million to support the Lagos State government’s poverty alleviation programme.
Dangote announced the donation at the launch of Dangote Trust Fund Micro-Grant in the belief that socio-economic changes through investments and interventions that improve lives of the less privileged would make a positive difference in the growth of the nation.
Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, speaking while receiving Dangote at the State House, said the donation was an indication of the business mogul’s love and support for the well being of the people.
“The real essence of wealth is to improve the standard of living of people around us. True wealth is measured not by the property one acquires but by the ability to positively affect the society and lift up less privileged people.
“The decision of Alhaji Aliko Dangote, to share his wealth with the people of Lagos State, is a strong indication of love and support for the well-being of our people. This gesture shows a depth of character and compassion that should be emulated by other people who are equally endowed.”
The programme provides disadvantaged and vulnerable women with a one-off N10,000 cash transfer to boost household income generation, which he said will help to reduce their vulnerability and meet their livelihood needs, Dangote said.
“It was launched in 2011 and is being systematically rolled out nationwide . The programme is aimed at complementing the efforts of state governments in their economic empowerment and poverty reduction drive,” he said.
