In an effort to promote a creative economy, an institute trained more than 100 youths free in 2017 to empower them to be creative contributors.

The Director, Mr Longe Bankole-Phillips, said on Wednesday that the Graig-Phillips College of Technology, Maryland, Lagos, trained the youths to reduce unemployment.

The director said “The institution, in giving back to the society, has trained some youths in 2017 in cinematography, animation, motion graphic designs, video editing, special effects, sound engineering, directing and presentation.

“We have been able to train these them for free as part of our corporate social responsibility.

“This is the first time we are doing this; we are pushing them to create jobs and not to look for jobs.

“They are thoroughly equipped and can do well out there,’’ he said.

Bankole-Phillips said that entertainment could replace oil as a heavy revenue earner, if well supported.

The director said that introduction of short plays ‘Flash’ – gradually taking over the entertainment scene – was boosting the performance of the industry.

“My institution has spent over N3.5 million in training over 100 students as our way of turning the creative industry into a creative economy,’’ he said.

The director said that many developed countries depended on the creative industry as a major source of revenue.

“We can, likewise, improve the industry to enable it to operate at optimal level,’’ he said.

Bankole-Phillips said that the college was determined to bring out the best in youths, thereby, reduce criminal tendencies.

He said that, during the training, the institute was able to put together 15 research-based short films  that addressed core issues in the society.
