Solomon Arase, Inspector General of Police (IGP) on Thursday said N4 billion was required to rebuild the 56 police stations, formations and facilities destroyed by Boko Haram in the North-East region.
Arase gave the hint at the National Assembly complex, Abuja, during an interactive session with the House Committee on Police Affairs, chaired by Haliru Jika.
The police chief, who called for immediate intervention to restore peace to the troubled states, pledged commitment towards crime control across the country.
He said: “A total of 56 police stations, formations and facilities have been destroyed by insurgents. The present devastating situation has greatly impaired, as it constitutes a major challenge to the capacity of the police within the formations.
“The total replacement value of the affected structures become about N4 billion for us to put those things back to shape.”
While speaking on the capacity of the police to combat terrorism, the IGP lamented that the mobile police, currently working with the military, were highly de-motivated.
Speaking earlier, Haliru Jika pledged commitment to sections 4(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which confers on the National Assembly the primary function of making laws for the peace, order and good governance as well as Section 14(2) that provides that the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government.
“We are committed to the discharge of the task of nation building through appropriate legislation, oversight and representation.
“Our relationship with the bodies under our supervision shall be a symbiotic one in our bid to address the numerous challenges at this time. The committee will synergise with the Nigerian Police in their determination to nip the security challenges in the bud.
“The committee will further address the perennial problem of the police welfare and pension issues as requested as well as such other militating factors to effective policing in the country.
“As parliamentarians, our focus will be the provision of adequate legislative impetus for the actualisation of the policies of government in Nigeria Police,” he said.
