Alleged double registration: Senate probes Kogi Governor

The Senate has commenced an investigation into allegations of double voter’s registration against the Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello.

Specifically, the upper chamber expressed concern on the issuance of Temporary Voters Card (TVC) to Bello last week by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Accordingly, the Senate directed its Committee on INEC to immediately conduct the investigation and submit report for its consideration within two weeks.

Adopting a motion sponsored by Mohammed Hassan (PDP, Yobe State), the Senate noted that the investigation would help in sanitising the electoral system.

Senate President Bukola Saraki in a remark said: “This issue is important because the stability of our democracy depends on the credibility of our electoral processes. And as such, we must ensure that the processes are always what we can be proud of, especially now that countries all over are looking up to our electoral processes.

“I am happy that the Chairman of INEC is seated here. It is something that he should look into and come back to tell us where the issue is”.

Recall that the electoral commission had last December dismissed three of its officials for their alleged roles in the double registration of the governor.

Bit in a statement dated February 26, 2018, the Commission noted that it had approved the transfer of Governor Bello’s voter’s registration from the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja to Okene Local Government Area of Kogi State.

The statement was signed by Ahmed Biambo, Director, Voter Education and Publicity in the state, on behalf of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC).
