Akpabio’s ordeal politically motivated – PDP

AkpabioThe Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the Federal Government of using state might against a former governor of Akwa Ibom State and incumbent Senate minority leader, Godswill Akpabio.

The nation’s anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is currently investigating Akpabio over alleged N108.1 billion fraud.

The opposition party believes investigation of the former governor is politically motivated and a ploy to weaken the party ahead of 2019 elections.

In a press conference on Sunday, Olisa Metuh, PDP national publicity secretary, wondered why the APC-led Federal Government ignored petitions against ex-governors of Rivers and Lagos states, Romiti Amaechi and Babatunde Fashola, and nominated them as ministers.

Metuh said the anti-corruption crusade of the present administration was a sham, adding that the anti-graft agency was being used as a tool to victimise PDP members.

He called on the President to stop what he called ‘selective anti-graft war.’

The PDP spokesman debunked the corruption allegation against the former governor, saying his “only building in Uyo is uncompleted and being built with verifiable bank loans.

“It is also part of the fight by the Presidency to weaken the legislature as an arm of government and prevent it from effectively carrying out its constitutional role of checks and balances in a democracy.

“As we speak, no APC member, despite the public petitions of corruption and squandering of state funds, has been invited or questioned by the EFCC. We challenge the EFCC, as an anti-corruption agency, to show Nigerians any member of the APC it has so far questioned, not to talk of being arrested since the emergence of this administration, despite petitions against them.”
