Ange Postecoglou has been sacked as Tottenham Hotspur manager just 16 days after guiding the club to a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final in Bilbao — their first major trophy in 17 years.
Despite the historic European success, the Australian manager paid the price for a disastrous domestic campaign in which Spurs lost 22 of their 38 Premier League matches and finished 17th, narrowly avoiding relegation.
Postecoglou, 59, had promised supporters that “season three is better than season two” as fans celebrated the European triumph in his second year at the club. But his time in north London ended exactly two years after he was appointed from Celtic on a four-year deal.
In a statement, the club said Postecoglou would be remembered for delivering “one of the club’s greatest moments,” becoming just the third manager in Spurs history to win a European trophy. However, the decision to part ways came after a “review of performances,” with the club adding it could not be swayed by “emotions aligned to this triumph.”
Brentford’s Thomas Frank has emerged as a leading contender to succeed Postecoglou. Other names under consideration include Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola, Fulham’s Marco Silva, Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner, and former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino, currently in charge of the United States national team.
