….As 22 Governors, APC Lawmakers endorse him for 2027
President Bola Tinubu, on Thursday, said the defection of prominent political figures from the opposition parties to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was in order, as they are exercising their constitutionally approved democratic rights
The President, who also debunked concerns that the action could lead Nigeria toward a one-party state, noted that these defections instead demonstrate the democratic preferences and ambitions of the populace.
The President stated this at the National Summit of the ruling All Progressives Congress which took place at the Banquet Hall of the State House, Abuja where about 22 Governors and all the APC Lawmakers, also move and adopted motions for the adoption of President Tinubu as the sole presidential candidate of the APC for the 2027 general elections.
All the 22 Progressive Governors under the auspices of the Progressives Governors’ Forum (PGF) unanimously passed the vote of confidence on President Bola Tinubu.
Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State and Chairman of the APC Governors Forum who spoke on behalf of all the Progressives Governors present at the event moved the first motion for the adoption of the President as the party’s sole Presidential candidate in 2027, which was supported by Uba Sani of Kaduna State, before the unanimous adoption by all the Governors present.
Uzodimma thereafter put the motion to vote before the participants at the National Summit, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President, Godswill Akpabio; members of the National Assembly, serving and former governors and APC members from across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, who through voice vote and standing ovation adopted President Tinubu for a second term in office come 2027.
The President, while speaking at the event after receiving a series of endorsements from the National Assembly and all major organs of the party, accepted the endorsement, with a promise to lead the nation to the promised land.
“I’m glad about what we have, and I’m expecting more to come. That is the game. We’re in a constitutional democracy. Don’t forget the freedom of movement and the freedom of association are not criminally punishable. Welcome to the progressives. Sweep them clean”, he said.
“The endorsement today, the ‘carry go’ expression—I know road We will lead you on to that promised land”, he declared.
The President rejected insinuations that Nigeria was dangerously headed toward single-party dominance.
“I’m glad about what we have and I’m expecting more to come. That is the game. We’re in a constitutional democracy. Don’t forget the freedom of movement and the freedom of association are not criminally punishable. Welcome to the progressives. Sweep them clean”, he said.
The President also offered reassurances on the economic trajectory of the country, stating that the administration’s efforts to revamp Nigeria’s economy are yielding results.
“The resuscitation of the Nigerian economy is on course. The hope is standing before you—take it on. You are the leaders and the conscience of this country. Nigeria will be industrialized. The next two years will be great. We have the mission, we have the vision”, he said.
Tinubu also acknowledged that some of those who worked for him in the 2023 general election were yet to be rewarded, but assured that his administration will soon come up with a broader, inclusive strategy that would accommodate everyone.e
“To many of you I have not offered political positions, be patient, many things are coming,” he said, signalling a broader inclusion strategy as his administration advances.
The APC National Summit, themed “Renewed Hope Agenda: The Journey So Far,” served both as a platform for scorecard presentation and a mini rally in consolidation ahead of the 2027 election cycle.
