Opera’s MiniPay, a non-custodial stablecoin wallet built on the Celo blockchain, is now available on both iOS and Android, offering users around the world a seamless, low-cost way to send, receive, and spend digital dollars.

Originally launched within the Opera browser, MiniPay has already onboarded over 7 million wallets across more than 50 countries. The app’s Android release in October 2024 added another million downloads, and its recent expansion to iOS now completes the ecosystem, allowing users to access the platform independently of the Opera browser.

Designed in collaboration with Celo for a mobile-first generation, MiniPay aims to close the gap between traditional financial systems and blockchain innovation. It enables instant global transactions without the usual fees, delays, or complexities associated with cross-border payments.

“MiniPay represents a new chapter in user experience, a simple, affordable dollar wallet that anyone can use, anywhere,” said Jørgen Arnsen, EVP Mobile at Opera. “With this launch, we’re removing the barriers that have kept financial systems out of reach for too many people for too long, and delivering a real alternative for savings, payments, and cross-border transactions.”

With international remittances and digital nomadism at an all-time high, the need for fast, reliable, and low-cost global payments is more relevant than ever.

MiniPay supports dollar-pegged stablecoins such as Tether’s USDT, which can be sent globally in under two seconds for less than $0.01. Users can also swap between supported stablecoins at no extra cost via its “Pockets” feature, developed in partnership with Mento Labs.

“By removing crypto complexity and delivering real-world functionality through its robust Mini app ecosystem, already opened by more than 5 million users weekly, MiniPay serves as the gateway to the new on-chain economy,” said Rene Reinsberg, Celo co-founder and president of Celo Foundation.

MiniPay is also tailored for the modern traveller. Whether visiting Africa, Latin America, or Southeast Asia, users can rely on MiniPay as a global travel wallet, managing stablecoin savings, spending locally without needing currency exchanges, and accessing services like eSIM purchases and bill payments.
