Samsung Electronics recently launched its newest flagship smartphones, the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 plus globally, and these phones have been available in the Nigerian market since the 23rd of March 2018, although customers were able to pre-order the devices before this date.

Some people know that the company has upgraded basic functionalities of the new smartphones and has added a few new features, however, many people still do not know exactly what makes the Galaxy S9 completely different from the Galaxy S8 which was released last year.

Finger print sensor position:  The position of finger print sensor at the back of the phone has been moved for convenience. The sensor on Galaxy S8 was placed right beside the rear camera, this made it almost impossible to unlock your phone with finger print sensor without having to smudge your camera lens. In fact, the finger print sensor will not work on the S8 if you have a bulky phone cover on your device. With the sensor now positioned below the camera lens on the S9 and S9+, it makes it very easy to scan without having to touch the camera. The S9 sensor is also more sensitive and reads your finger print a lot faster than it did on the Galaxy S8.

Blood pressure sensor: Samsung has added a blood pressure sensor to its new devices. This is in addition to heart rate sensor which is also present in its other devices.

Improved camera features: The S9 and S9 plus have been improved to match up with time and technology advancements. Redesigned with a new Dual Aperture lens that powers an innovative low light camera, Super Slow-mo video capabilities and personalised AR Emoji, the Galaxy S9 and S9+ ensure users do not miss a moment and make their everyday epic. The Galaxy S9 and S9+ deliver an enhanced entertainment experience with powerful stereo speakers tuned by AKG, immersive audio with Dolby Atmos and a refined edge-to-edge Infinity Display1– a key staple in Samsung’s design heritage. In addition, the Galaxy S9 and S9+ will come with the new SmartThings app, which unites Samsung’s existing IoT services into one single, smart experience. The camera on the S9 can physically switch between F1.5 and F2.4 depending on your lighting.

Solomon Osibeluwa, Software engineer at Samsung says that “the camera has been re-imagined to mimic the human eye, which means that it dilates to take in more light.”

Super slow-mo: The new Galaxy S9 and S9+ have the unique feature of capturing 960 frames per second for a video, allowing for a super slow motion video. The phones also offer automatic motion detection. An intelligent feature that detects movement in the frame and automatically begins to record – all users have to do is set up the shot.

AR Emoji: Samsung lets users create an emoji that looks, sounds and acts like them. AR Emoji uses a data-based machine learning algorithm, which analyses a 2D image of the user and maps out more than 100 facial features to create a 3D model that reflects and imitates expressions, like winks and nods, for true personalisation. AR Emoji shares users’ real-life emotions not only in video but also with a range of stickers and uses a standard AGIF file format so users can share their emojis across most third-party messaging platforms.

During the official launch of the devices in Lagos on Friday, 23 March 2018, John Park, President Samsung Electronics Central Africa said that Samsung is known for constantly upgrading with intelligent features to suit the ever changing needs of people.

Jingak Chung, Managing Director, Samsung Electronics West Africa said; “The way we use our smartphones has changed as communication and self-expression has evolved and with the Galaxy S9 and S9+, we have reimagined the smartphone camera. Not only do the Galaxy S9 and S9+ enable consumers to shoot great photos and videos anywhere, it’s a smartphone that’s designed to help them connect to others and express themselves in a way that’s unique and personal to them.”

The devices are available in Midnight Black, Titanium Gray, and Lilac Purple colours.
