Interswitch, an integrated digital payments and commerce company with the goal of encouraging theoretical learning of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects, recently unveiled the SPAK Initiative to reward excellence and provide opportunities for developing innovative solutions for societal problems.
SPAK, an acronym for Speed, Precision, Accuracy and Knowledge, is a national science competition aim at re-igniting the importance of STEM subjects for Nigerian youth. The competition is anchored around key value areas necessary for progressive future in a knowledge based society.
Cherry Eromosele, Chief Marketing Officer, Interswitch, in her welcome address said, SPAK is a distinctive concept under the Interswitch ‘Switch A Future’ initiative. As a mix of education, technology and entertainment which align with Interswitch’s fundamental values of excellence and innovation, is a this initiative is designed to identify, promote and spark the right support and reward for STEM students and stakeholders,” she stated.
According to Eromosele, Interswitch is committed to grooming and developing new talents in Nigerian educational sector through STEM. “For our youth to succeed in today’s knowledge-based economy; they need to acquire the right skill set, their minds need to be re-engineered and reconciled with STEM education in order to compete in or create a job market.
“We are committed to building a brighter future for the Nigerian child, and we are firm believers in the Nigerian dream. It is up to us to push this country to the forefront of science, technology, engineering and mathematical development and invention,” said Cherry.
It was opined that education has suffered massive decline in Nigeria, leaving the youth poorly equipped for future tasks necessary for self fulfilment and nation building.
Charles Uwakwe, Registrar, National Education Commission (NECO), in his remarks lauded the initiative as periodic in terms of Public Private Partnership (PPP). According to him, NECO is collaborating with Interswitch as the subject technical partner for the SPAK Initiative.
According to a recent WEF research, by 2030, more than half of the jobs in the world will be STEM based. Thinking ahead, Interswitch is thus making a conscious attempt to promote education and technology in Nigeria, by equipping the younger generation for the future.
The SPAK Initiative is open to students in Senior Secondary School (SS2), and schools nationwide are encouraged to register six of their best students in STEM subjects, giving room for gender balance.
The winner of the Interswitch SPAK Initiative will be awarded a five year scholarship, laptop and a gold trophy. The second prize winner will be awarded a three year scholarship, laptop and silver trophy, while the third prize winner gets a 2 year scholarship, a laptop, and a bronze trophy. However, all three winners are guaranteed immediate employment at Interswitch upon graduation.
