The Super Eagles of Nigeria will take on West African rivals Ghana in a four-nation friendly tournament in June, adding to their scheduled friendly against Russia as they gear up for the next phase of their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.
While exact dates are yet to be confirmed, both matches will serve as crucial tune-ups ahead of Nigeria’s September qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa. Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle’s side will host Rwanda in Uyo before travelling for a tricky away clash with South Africa on matchday eight.
Nigeria’s qualification hopes for the 2026 FIFA World Cup suffered a setback after a 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe, leaving them fourth in their group and in need of a strong finish to secure a World Cup spot. A video of Victor Osimhen leaving the pitch visibly frustrated after the draw has surfaced online, highlighting the team’s disappointment.
Chelle confirmed the Ghana friendly following the Zimbabwe match, also noting that his focus will shift to preparations for the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in July before returning to World Cup qualifying duty.
Nigeria and Ghana last met in a friendly in March, with the Super Eagles winning 2-1. They also faced each other in the African Nations Championship qualifiers in December, where Nigeria’s B team prevailed 3-1 on aggregate.
Historically, Ghana has won 22 of their 56 meetings, with 21 draws and Nigeria claiming 13 victories.
