Victor Wembanyama has been medically cleared to return to action for the San Antonio Spurs after being sidelined in February due to deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in his right shoulder.
The 21-year-old French sensation confirmed the news to L’Équipe, stating, “I’m officially cleared to return.” The update was also corroborated by ESPN and MySA.com, confirming the Spurs have cleared Wembanyama for the upcoming NBA season.
Wembanyama, nicknamed “Wemby,” was named NBA Rookie of the Year in 2024 and earned All-Star honours in a remarkable debut season that was cut short on February 20, when the shoulder issue was diagnosed and the team opted to shut him down for the remainder of the campaign.
The 7-foot-3 (2.21m) center posted dominant numbers in his rookie year, averaging 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 3.8 blocks, and 1.1 steals across 46 games.
The Spurs had initially projected Wembanyama to return in time for training camp in late September, but his recovery has come ahead of schedule. The young star has been spotted in Las Vegas, watching the Spurs’ Summer League squad and staying close to the team’s development process.
His early return boosts expectations for the Spurs heading into the 2025/26 NBA season.
