Tyson Fury could return from retirement for Anthony Joshua fight

Tyson Fury could be lured out of retirement for a much-anticipated, all-British showdown with Anthony Joshua, a fight many consider to be a generational clash in heavyweight boxing.

Fury officially announced his retirement for the fourth time in January following a second consecutive defeat to Oleksandr Usyk. However, speculation about a comeback has intensified, with the former world champion reportedly back in full training.

Earlier this year, the Gipsy King revealed that he had resumed twice-daily training sessions, despite repeated claims from him and his camp that he was stepping away from the sport for good. Given Fury’s history of returning to the ring after announcing retirements, many fans have met his latest decision with scepticism.

Throughout his illustrious career, Fury has faced some of the biggest names in boxing, including Deontay Wilder and Wladimir Klitschko. However, a blockbuster clash with Anthony Joshua has remained elusive, despite years of negotiations and anticipation.

Promoter Frank Warren believes that the prospect of finally facing Joshua might be enough to reignite Fury’s competitive fire.

“He’s with his family, enjoying life,” Warren told Sky Sports. “I haven’t spoken to him about returning to boxing, and I wouldn’t. If he does decide to, I’ll support him — and if he doesn’t, I’ll support that too.

He’s been a magnificent servant to boxing, a two-time world champion, financially secure, and he doesn’t need to fight. But Tyson is a fighting man. You just never know.”

“Fighting Joshua would tempt all of us to try and get him to do it. That’s the fight everybody wants to see, a generational fight, Warren added.

I know AJ wants it, Tyson wanted it at one stage, and we were close. But it didn’t happen. You never know what can happen in boxing.”

The two British heavyweights have engaged in multiple rounds of negotiations over the years, but the highly anticipated “Battle of Britain” has yet to materialise. They were closest to fighting in 2020, when both held all four major world titles between them. However, a U.S. court ruled that Fury was contractually obligated to complete a trilogy bout with Deontay Wilder, forcing the Joshua fight to be shelved.

Joshua was then ordered to face Oleksandr Usyk, losing his IBF, WBO, and WBA belts in the process.
