Nigeria’s sprint hurdler and world record holder, Tobi Amusan, clinched the silver medal in the women’s 100m hurdles at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
Amusan clocked 12.28 seconds to finish second behind Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji, who stormed to gold in a new national record of 12.24 seconds. Grace Stark of the United States claimed bronze with 12.34 seconds, while her compatriot Masai Russell placed fourth in 12.44 seconds.
The Nigerian star had earlier won her semifinal heat in 12.36 seconds, setting up a thrilling showdown in the final. Her performance in Tokyo comes as a strong response to critics after she missed out on the finals at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Nigeria’s medal hopes in Tokyo remain alive through 21-year-old Ezekiel Nathaniel, who advanced to the men’s 400m hurdles semifinals after running 48.37 seconds.
Nathaniel, one of Africa’s brightest young hurdlers, will aim to reach the final and challenge for a podium finish later this week.
