Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger could be suspended for the Champions League quarter-final first leg against Arsenal, according to reports.
Rudiger, a key player in Carlo Ancelotti’s defense, is under investigation by UEFA for an alleged ‘defiant gesture’ during Real Madrid’s celebrations following their penalty shootout victory over Atletico Madrid in the last 16.
UEFA disciplinary committee to decide on Friday
The 32-year-old German international, who joined Madrid from Chelsea in 2022, is alleged to have made a throat-slitting gesture towards Atletico Madrid fans at the Metropolitano Stadium. According to Marca, UEFA’s disciplinary committee will decide on Friday whether Rudiger will face a one-match suspension.
Vinicius Jr, Mbappe, and Ceballos also under scrutiny
Vinicius Jr, Kylian Mbappe, and Dani Ceballos are also being investigated for their post-match celebrations. However, their actions are expected to result in fines rather than suspensions, whereas Rudiger’s case is considered more severe due to the ‘threatening nature’ of his gesture.
Boost for Arsenal if Rudiger misses out
With Rudiger’s presence against Arsenal in doubt, his absence would be a significant defensive blow for Real Madrid and a potential boost for Mikel Arteta’s side. The German has been a key figure in Madrid’s backline, helping them to a La Liga and Champions League double last season.
Ancelotti defends his players
Ahead of UEFA’s verdict, Carlo Ancelotti has defended his players, insisting they “did nothing wrong.”
“We are confident in UEFA’s verdict. The players were just celebrating, that’s it,” said the Real Madrid manager.
A final decision is expected on Friday, which will determine whether Rudiger can take part in the crucial first-leg tie at Emirates Stadium on Tuesday, April 8.
