Premier League champions Liverpool are reportedly ready to activate the release clause of Bayer Leverkusen star Jeremie Frimpong as they move closer to securing their first signing of the summer transfer window.
The 24-year-old Dutch international, who impressed during Leverkusen’s historic Bundesliga-winning campaign, is a key target for incoming manager Arne Slot. Talks between the clubs have progressed in recent days, with Liverpool expected to meet Frimpong’s €35 million release clause.
Frimpong, known for his explosive pace and attacking threat down the right flank, is being lined up as a potential replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold. The Liverpool vice-captain is set to leave Anfield at the end of the season after agreeing to join Real Madrid on a free transfer.
Slot, who takes over from Jürgen Klopp this summer, sees Frimpong as a perfect fit for his dynamic style of play. The Dutchman made 53 appearances in all competitions for Leverkusen and the Netherlands this season, contributing significantly to Leverkusen’s unbeaten Bundesliga campaign under Xabi Alonso.
A former Manchester City academy graduate, Frimpong joined Celtic in 2019 before moving to Germany in 2021. His former club, Celtic, are in line to benefit from the move, with reports suggesting they could receive up to 30% of the transfer fee due to a sell-on clause included in his move to Leverkusen.
Liverpool are hoping to finalise the deal quickly, as they prepare for life after Alexander-Arnold and begins reshaping their squad under new leadership.
