Hojlund’s strike rescues Man United against 10-man Bournemouth

Rasmus Hojlund spared Manchester United from a third consecutive Premier League defeat with a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser in Sunday’s 1–1 draw against 10-man Bournemouth.

Ruben Amorim’s struggling side were rocked early on when Antoine Semenyo fired the hosts ahead in the first half at the Vitality Stadium.

The match’s turning point came with 20 minutes remaining when Bournemouth forward Evanilson was controversially sent off.

Initially booked for a challenge on Noussair Mazraoui, Evanilson’s yellow card was upgraded to a red after VAR intervention, despite replays suggesting he slipped before making contact with the United defender.

Facing the prospect of a fourth loss in five league games, United managed to salvage a point through Hojlund’s last-gasp strike deep into stoppage time.

However, despite Hojlund’s late heroics, it was yet another underwhelming performance from a lifeless United side, who languish in 14th place in the Premier League table.

Liverpool are poised to draw level with United’s record as England’s most successful top-flight club when they are crowned champions, highlighting the gulf between the historic rivals.

United, without a league title since 2013, now face the more modest goal of simply breaking back into the top five next season.

Amorim, who replaced the sacked Erik ten Hag in November, recently claimed he had “no regrets” about taking the United job, although he admitted questioning the timing of his arrival.

Since taking charge, Amorim has overseen just six league victories, with United guaranteed to record their lowest points total of the Premier League era and facing the prospect of their worst finish since relegation in 1973/74.
