Gabriel scores late winner as Arsenal beat Newcastle 2-1

Gabriel scored a stoppage-time goal as Arsenal came from behind to claim a dramatic 2-1 win over Newcastle United in the Premier League fixture on Sunday, cutting Liverpool’s lead at the top to just two points.

The Brazilian defender rose highest to head in a 96th-minute corner, sparking wild celebrations at the Emirates and moving Mikel Arteta’s men up to second in the standings.

“This was a statement win,” said Arteta. “There are opportunities, there are moments in the season when you have to find a way to win.”

Arsenal’s late flourish came just a day after Liverpool suffered their first defeat of the season, falling 2-1 to Crystal Palace courtesy of a stoppage-time strike from former Gunner Eddie Nketiah.

Nick Woltemade had put Newcastle ahead in the 34th minute, before Mikel Merino’s 84th-minute header looked to have salvaged only a point for Arsenal after last week’s late rescue act against Manchester City. But Gabriel’s decisive header ensured there would be no repeat frustration.

“It’s unbelievable, man. Late winners, there’s nothing better in football. Speechless,” said Bukayo Saka afterwards.

The win carried extra significance, with Arsenal taking full advantage of Liverpool’s slip and piling pressure back on the champions, who themselves have relied on stoppage-time goals this season, including their own dramatic victory over Newcastle in August.
