Lionel Messi and Inter Miami were held to a goalless draw by Egyptian giants Al Ahly in Florida as the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup kicked off.
Messi came closest to snatching a dramatic stoppage-time winner, but his trademark curling effort was brilliantly tipped onto the bar by Al Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy in the dying moments of the Group A clash.

Al Ahly had their chance to claim victory in the first half when Trezeguet’s penalty was saved by Miami goalkeeper Oscar Ustari. El Shenawy again proved crucial in stoppage time, denying a close-range header from Maxi Falcon to preserve the point.
For FIFA, which has faced criticism over the tournament’s expansion, the goalless draw was the only setback on an otherwise successful opening night.
Concerns over poor attendance were eased as the Hard Rock Stadium, home of the NFL’s Miami Dolphins, was nearly full at kick-off, with over 10,000 Al Ahly fans creating a vibrant atmosphere.
Al Ahly, 12-time African Champions League winners and 45-time Egyptian league champions, made their presence felt early, with supporters arriving well before kick-off, filling the stadium with chants and energy.
The FIFA Club World Cup opener avoided the chaotic scenes witnessed at last year’s Copa America final at the same venue, delivering a positive start to the newly expanded global competition.
