The federal government on Wednesday fulfilled its long-standing promise to the victorious 1994 Super Eagles squad by allocating housing units to the players who brought glory to Nigeria at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Tunisia.
The announcement was made in Abuja by Pemi Temitope, Director of Public Building and Housing Development at the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development. The development was also confirmed in an official statement released by Badamasi Haiba, Director of Press and Public Relations for the ministry.
According to the ministry, members of the 1994 team are receiving houses across various states, with some, like former striker Efan Ekoku, allocated homes in Abuja. Others will receive theirs in their respective home states.
During a handover ceremony, Temitope presented an allocation letter to Ekoku, represented by his niece, Lisa Jenifer Nwagbogun.
“I am deeply grateful to the Federal Government and the Ministry of Housing for fulfilling this long-standing pledge to my uncle. It is truly heartening to witness such commitment to integrity and follow-through,” Nwagbogun said at the ceremony.
Temitope emphasised that the move is part of the government’s commitment to honouring past promises and recognising the patriotic service of national icons.
“This shows our dedication to keeping promises and appreciating the efforts of our sports heroes who brought honour to the nation,” he stated.
The journey to this moment began in 1994 when the then-military government promised housing rewards to the Super Eagles squad that won Nigeria’s second continental title.
It wasn’t until 2022 that former President Muhammadu Buhari approved the implementation of the pledge.
Now, under the supervision of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, the promise is finally being realised, marking a significant moment of recognition for one of Nigeria’s most iconic football teams.
