Newcastle United have reportedly reached a verbal agreement with Brentford for the signing of striker Yoane Wissa in a deal worth £55 million.
The agreement is structured as £50m upfront plus £5m in add-ons, with the DR Congo international expected to travel to Newcastle to complete his medical and finalise personal terms.
Brentford had previously rejected two offers from the Magpies, but talks were reopened late in the transfer window to reach a breakthrough before the 19:00 BST deadline.
The move comes just days after Newcastle sanctioned the £125m British transfer record sale of Alexander Isak to Liverpool, forcing manager Eddie Howe back into the market for attacking reinforcements.
Despite the recent club-record signing of Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart, Howe has been determined to further bolster his forward line.
Wissa, 28, publicly pushed for the move over the weekend, accusing Brentford of “unduly standing in his way” despite multiple offers from Newcastle. In a statement on Instagram, he said:
“I have stayed silent for much of the summer, but with just hours remaining of the transfer window, I feel compelled to make it clear that I want to leave Brentford. I believe the club are unduly standing in my way despite a series of fair offers.”
Brentford, meanwhile, have already seen significant squad changes this summer, with Bryan Mbeumo joining Manchester United for £65m, goalkeeper Mark Flekken moving to Bayer Leverkusen for £8m, and midfielder Christian Norgaard signing for Arsenal in a £15m deal.
The Bees offset those exits with the club-record £42.5m arrival of Dango Ouattara from Bournemouth, but Wissa’s departure will mark another major attacking loss.
The signing of Wissa offers much-needed attacking firepower for Newcastle after the departure of Isak and failed pursuits of Wolves’ Jorgen Strand Larsen, whose club rejected multiple bids.
