Crystal Palace fans disrupt Diogo Jota tribute at Community Shield

A minute’s silence in memory of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva was disrupted by a section of Crystal Palace supporters ahead of the Community Shield clash with Liverpool at Wembley Stadium.

Jota, 28, and Silva died in July after their Lamborghini veered off the road and burst into flames near Zamora in northwestern Spain.

Both teams and staff lined up for the tribute, but loud voices from the Palace end broke the silence, prompting boos from Liverpool supporters and even some Crystal Palace fans who attempted to quiet the disruption. Referee Chris Kavanagh cut the tribute short with an early whistle.

Liverpool have honoured Jota’s memory in several ways, including retiring his No. 20 jersey. On Sunday, in the 20th minute, Liverpool supporters applauded in his memory, an ovation that turned to cheers when Jeremie Frimpong scored to put the Premier League champions 2-1 ahead.

Manager Arne Slot praised the unity shown by his players in the wake of Jota’s death, calling it “one of the toughest positions imaginable” and vowing the club will “always carry Diogo with us in our hearts.”
