Club World Cup: Jack Grealish to be left out of Man City's squad

Jack Grealish is expected to be left out of Manchester City’s squad for the expanded FIFA Club World Cup this summer, casting fresh doubt over his future at the Etihad Stadium.

The 29-year-old’s position at the club remains uncertain heading into the summer transfer window, with increasing belief that a move could revive his career and offer more consistent playing time.

Top European clubs are reportedly monitoring the England international, who may welcome a fresh start at a top side capable of offering him regular football.

However, Jack Grealish reported £300,000-per-week wages could pose a stumbling block for potential suitors, whether in a permanent deal or a loan arrangement.

City are actively reshaping their squad, having agreed a €55 million (£46.3m) deal with AC Milan for Dutch midfielder Tijjani Reijnders. The Premier League champions are also pursuing Lyon forward Rayan Cherki and Wolves left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri.

Sources indicate that Grealish is keeping an open mind about his future, with the 32-team Club World Cup running from June 14 to July 13 in the United States.

Grealish joined City from Aston Villa in 2021 for a then-British record fee of £100 million and played a key role in City’s Treble-winning 2022–23 campaign. During his time at the club, he has lifted three Premier League titles, the FA Cup, UEFA Champions League, and the previous format of the Club World Cup.

Despite that success, he has struggled for minutes, starting just seven Premier League matches in the 2024–25 season.

“Of course, Jack has to play,” Pep Guardiola said in May. “He’s an unbelievable player who has to play football every three days. It didn’t happen this season and last season either. He needs to do it — with us or at another place.”

Grealish’s limited game time has also impacted his international career. Having missed out on England’s Euro 2024 squad, he now faces a race to regain form and relevance ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
