Champions League: Inter edge Bayern to set up semi-final cracker with Barcelona

Inter Milan booked their place in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals after a thrilling 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich at a rain-soaked San Siro on Wednesday, sealing a 4-3 aggregate victory.

The Serie A giants will now face Barcelona in the last four, rekindling memories of their famous 2010 semi-final triumph en route to lifting the title under José Mourinho.

Goals in quick succession from Lautaro Martinez and Benjamin Pavard turned the tide after Harry Kane had equalised the aggregate score early in the second half.

Eric Dier’s 75th-minute header earned Bayern a draw on the night, but it wasn’t enough to deny Inter a place in the semi-finals.

Simone Inzaghi’s side weathered not just Bayern’s attacks but also challenging conditions, with heavy rain and swirling winds disrupting rhythm and adding an edge to an already tense encounter.

“We’ve had a packed schedule with loads of matches one after the other, but we don’t give up. We have personality, heart, and intelligence,” said captain Martinez to Amazon Prime. “We were on the back foot at times today, but we showed again we can do great things.”

Inter’s dream of repeating their historic 2010 treble remains alive. They sit three points clear at the top of Serie A and are into the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia, where they will meet city rivals AC Milan.

Wednesday’s result showcased the resilience and quality of Inzaghi’s squad, who reached the Champions League final just two seasons ago, narrowly losing to Manchester City.

Bayern, meanwhile, were chasing their seventh European crown but fell short, hampered by a string of injuries. After Pavard’s powerful finish in the 61st minute raised hopes of a comeback, the German champions failed to find the breakthrough they needed.

Inter also have the advantage of hosting the second leg of their semi-final clash with Barcelona at the San Siro, the same ground where they toppled the Catalans 15 years ago.
