Arsenal are on the brink of completing the signing of Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres, with only final details left to resolve following a delay over add-on negotiations.
BBC Sport had reported last week that a £63.5 million deal was nearing completion, with the Gunners aiming to finalise the move before the start of their pre-season tour of Asia on Sunday. However, discussions between Arsenal and Sporting over performance-related bonuses and add-ons have slowed the process.
Gyokeres, 27, has already agreed personal terms and is set to sign a five-year contract at the Emirates Stadium.
The Swedish forward has attracted significant interest this summer after a sensational season in Portugal, scoring 54 goals in 52 appearances to help Sporting clinch back-to-back Primeira Liga titles.
Arsenal turned to Gyokeres after their pursuit of RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko stalled earlier in the window.
Manager Mikel Arteta has prioritised signing a proven striker following last season’s shortcomings in front of goal, where the Gunners finished 10 points behind Premier League champions Liverpool and netted 17 fewer goals.
The signing of Gyokeres would be Arsenal’s second major attacking addition this summer, following the arrival of England winger Noni Madueke from Chelsea.
