Ademola Lookman returns to Atalanta training after failed Inter move

Ademola Lookman reportedly rejoined Atalanta’s training camp on Tuesday after abandoning sessions for several weeks in an attempt to force a move to Inter Milan.

Reports in La Gazzetta dello Sport suggest the Nigerian international could now face disciplinary action and a fine from the club.

Inter Milan’s pursuit of Lookman, the 2024 CAF African Player of the Year, collapsed after Atalanta rejected their €45 million bid, including bonuses.

Despite weeks of negotiations, La Dea refused to budge, prompting Lookman to hand in a transfer request and accuse the club of breaking promises. He left Italy to train privately in the UK, a move that intensified the transfer saga.

Atalanta CEO Luca Percassi later clarified that while an agreement existed to allow Lookman to leave under certain conditions, any transfer within Serie A would not be sanctioned.

That stance ultimately ended Inter’s hopes of signing the forward, with the Nerazzurri shifting their attention to midfield reinforcements and integrating youngsters such as Pio Esposito and Bonny alongside Lautaro Martínez and Marcus Thuram.

Lookman’s reluctant return makes it clear that any appearances this season will be in Atalanta colours, with less than a week before the Serie A campaign kicks off. Gian Piero Gasperini’s men begin their season at home against newly-promoted Pisa on Sunday evening.
