Tecno mobile seems to be up to the task with the fierce competition in Nigeria’s smartphone market. The Chinese OEM just keeps launching newer and more modern devices ever so often – upgrading with time and technological advancements I must say.
Last week Thursday, April 5 2018, Tecno mobile launched its latest flagship devices – the Camon X and X pro. Although the Camon X has a few similarities to the Camon CM released a few months ago, Tecno has made some remarkable improvements including the new face ID, more advanced rear and front camera quality and a slightly larger screen display, among others.
I got the Tecno Camon X a few days, got to try out its new qualities and features and it is safe to say the pros of the phone outweigh the cons. You decide whether to make the switch.
Design: The relatively light weight phone comes in a plastic casing, which gives it a less luxurious look, however, the plastic casing makes the phone much easier to grip and less prone to breakage and cracks on or around the device. Tecno mobile has given an added advantage by adding a free phone cover in the box of the Tecno Camon X, so there’s less worry about having to buy a case to protect your phone. The edges of the phone are also well rounded which gives it a soft, nice look. With 6” (six inch) full HD display, 2.5D corning third glass and a ratio 18:9 full view screen, the phone allows for more content with less scroll. It’s also a blessing when watching movies, videos or when playing games on your phone.
Specs: Those of you that are not so technology inclined might thinks of phone specifications as jargons, but I’m going to take my time to clearly explain in writing, the specifications of the Camon X and why these are important. First, the Tecno Camon X comes with a 2.0GHz Octa-Core processor which gives the advantage of being able to multi task. ‘Octa’, as the name implies means eight, and in smartphone terms, more cores provide more capacity to mobile performing many tasks in the single instance. Secondly, Tecno Camon X runs on Android 8.1 system and comes with (16GB ROM). This means 16 gigabytes of space used to store files, apps music and the operating system (OS) and 3GB RAM which is its volatile memory. The memory space on the device is quite adequate, however, I would have preferred a slightly larger memory space. With its 3750mAh battery, the Tecno Camon X can last up to 24hours with full usage without having to recharge. This excited me, as battery power is usually the first concern for Nigerian smartphone users, due to unstable power supply.
Camera: Like many other people, the first thing I am interested in when it comes to smartphone is the camera quality. The Tecno Camon X, with its 20 mega pixel (20MP) front facing camera with dual flash and 16MP rear camera with ring flash, produces clearer, sharper and more defined picture quality even in low light conditions. Tecno has clearly set itself as the king of selfie cameras with its precise attention to selfie cameras on almost all its smartphones. A down side to the camera on the Camon X is that it does not come with a portrait mode on the back camera. I was anticipating a dual camera set up at the back. However, its super pixel mode will add more pixels to your shot.
Face ID and other features: The face identification technology is the newest feature addition to both the Camon X and the Camon X pro. Just like the new Samsung and Apple devices and the Infinix HOT S3, as well as some other smartphones, the face ID on the Tecno Camon X is a new security feature that can be used to unlock the device. This is in addition to its finger print scanner at the back of the device. By grasping the face information, the face ID on Camon X has 50 millisecond (50ms) recognition rate that makes it super fast to unlock. However, the face ID does not work in extreme low light condition so you might be better off using the other unlocking options while in the dark. Also, during hot weather conditions, the HiOS UI (mobile operating system that allows for a wide range of user customisation without requiring rooting the mobile device) identifies components causing heating in the background and quickly cools off the phone through a series of methods.
Pricing: The price of the Tecno Camon X is yet to be announced, but as mid range phones, I expect both the Camon X and Camon X pro to be between N58, 000 and N65, 000 or there about.
