The Senate on Tuesday suspended plenary in honour of the Chairman, Senate Committee on Poverty Alleviation and Social Welfare, Ali Wakil.
Until his demise at the weekend, Wakil represented Bauchi South Senatorial District. He slumped and died at his Abuja residence.
Senate Leader, Ahmad Lawan, who raised a Point of Order on the matter at Tuesday plenary, said it was a sad incidence for the Senate, his senatorial district and for the entire country and development of democracy in the country.
“It is our tradition and convention and culture in the Senate and indeed in the National Assembly that when this kind of divine incidence happens and we lose a colleague either in the Senate or the House of Representatives, we normally observe one minute silence in honour of the departed,” he said.
Deputy Chief Whip, Philip Aduda seconded the motion.
In his remarks, Senate President Bukola Saraki led a ‘One Minute Silence’ in honour of the late lawmaker.
Lawmakers are expected to hold valedictory session for their late colleague at Wednesday plenary.
