Senate President Bukola Saraki on Tuesday announced the constitution of a joint committee of the National Assembly to commence investigation into last week’s invasion of the Senate chambers.
Saraki who admitted that there were security lapses in the National Assembly, also disclosed that its committee on National Security has been mandated to engage the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Inspector General of Police on how best to strengthen security of the National Assembly Complex.
These are the resolutions of the Senate after a closed door session which lasted for about three hours.
Saraki however, did not announce the names of members of the joint committee.
“We also resolved to constitute a joint committee of the Senate and House of Representatives to investigate the incidence of the 18th of April to look at the factors leading to it and also make recommendations on how to ensure such never happens again in any of the two chambers,” Saraki said.
It would be recalled that on Wednesday last week, armed political thugs suspected to be loyalists of the suspended senator representing Delta Central Senatorial District, Ovie Omo-Agege, disrupted Senate plenary and snatched the symbol of authority – mace.
This is the first plenary Saraki was presiding over, as he was away in the United States of America attending the World Bank/IMF Spring meetings when the incident occurred.
