Saudi Arabia has unveiled the King Salman Gate Project, a large-scale multi-use urban development near AlMasjid AlHaram in Makkah, designed to expand infrastructure, attract global investment, and strengthen the city’s role as a centre of pilgrimage and commerce.
Announced by His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince, Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of RUA AlHaram AlMakki Company, the project spans 12 million square metres of gross floor area. It forms part of the Kingdom’s wider plan to enhance access, accommodation, and service delivery for millions of pilgrims visiting the Holy City each year.
The project supports the Pilgrim Experience Programme under Vision 2030, which seeks to modernise Makkah’s infrastructure while promoting economic diversification. King Salman Gate will feature residential, hospitality, commercial, and cultural developments, with capacity for 900,000 indoor and outdoor prayer spaces and direct connectivity to public transport networks.
In addition to new developments, the project will restore and redevelop around 19,000 square metres of heritage sites, preserving the cultural and historical essence of Makkah. By 2036, it is expected to generate over 300,000 jobs, supporting the city’s long-term economic and social transformation.
For investors, King Salman Gate represents a strategic opportunity within Saudi Arabia’s expanding real estate and tourism sectors. Its scale and proximity to AlMasjid AlHaram position it as one of the most significant developments in the region, appealing to both domestic and international investors, including those from Nigeria, where interest in faith-driven investments continues to grow.
Developed by RUA AlHaram AlMakki Company, a Public Investment Fund (PIF) enterprise established in 2017, the project aligns with PIF’s broader mission to advance urban development around AlMasjid AlHaram and strengthen Saudi Arabia’s non-oil economy. The company is focused on sustainable urban design, efficient resource management, and ensuring accessibility for residents, pilgrims, and visitors.
King Salman Gate is set to redefine how Makkah integrates faith, functionality, and modern city planning. It underscores Saudi Arabia’s ambition to make the Holy City a global model for integrated urban development while offering new avenues for cross-border partnerships and investment.
