The Rivers State House of Assembly has initiated moves towards mainstreaming climate change actions in the State, as well as establishing the State Council on Climate Change.
In this regard, the Assembly, at its 20th sitting last week Friday, held the first reading on the Rivers State Climate Change Bill, 2025.
The bill, which seeks to mainstream climate change actions, establish the State Council on Climate Change and provide for related matters was sponsored by Martin Chike Amaewhule, Speaker of the Assembly, and his deputy, Dumle Maol.
According to a release signed by Martins Wachukwu, Special Assistant on Media to the Speaker, the bill is “In keeping with the Assembly’s commitment to legislate for the common good of the people.”
Maol, at the Assembly’s sitting on Friday, said the bill when passed, would go a long way to mainstreaming climate change actions in the State.
Amaewhule, the Speaker, however urged Assembly members to study the bill thoroughly and prepare for a robust debate at the next sitting.
Also on Friday, Amaewhule referred two petitions against Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited and Heirs Energies to the House Committee on Public Complaints and Petitions to intervene and report to the House.
