There are indications that the planned trip of President Muhammadu Buhari to Ogoni to launch the cleanup of the town may have been cancelled.
The cleanup of heavily polluted Ogoni land was recommended by the United Nation Environmental Programme, UNEP in its report in 2011. But the report has remained unimplemented over the years. The Buhari administration was hailed by Nigerians for its decision to embark on the clean up exercise.
The President will now be represented by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the event. No reason has been given for the cancellation.
Our calls to get an official confirmation of the cancellation of the President’s trip to Ogoni have not been answered.
