The Senate has summoned Attahiru Jega, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to appear before it on Wednesday (today) to explain the circumstances that led to the postponement of February 14 and 28 general elections.
This comes as some opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) senators staged a walk- out on the grounds that the upper chamber should concentrate on security chiefs who instigated Jega to shift the polls. They reasoned that security chiefs and not Jega should have been summoned.

Jega had addressed a press conference a week to the presidential and National Assembly polls that the exercise was postponed due to security reasons. In a motion moved by Senate leader, Victor Ndoma Egba, he called on INEC boss to appear before the upper chamber and be made to display the workability of the card reader to senators. He kicked against the use of card readers for the polls, saying this is contrary to Section 52 of the Electoral Act (as amended). Although minority leader, George Akume (Benue North West), seconded the motion, he, however, made futile at- tempt to amend the motion for service chiefs to appear alongside the INEC boss but was overruled by Senate President David Mark who presided over the session.
