Abba Moro, Senate Minority Leader has dismissed fears that Nigeria could devolve into a one-party state, assuring that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) remains strong and is not on the verge of collapse.
Speaking during the PDP North Central Zonal Elective Congress in Jos, Plateau State on Saturday, Moro expressed optimism about the party’s revival through its ongoing restructuring efforts.
The congress, which brought together delegates from across the North Central region including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), witnessed a lively turnout as party members elected new zonal executives.
Senator Moro said the congress marked a vital step in rejuvenating the PDP ahead of its forthcoming National Convention, which will usher in a new national leadership.
“This is a successful exercise with clear enthusiasm from all quarters. The current phase of elections from the ward to zonal level is part of a well-thought plan to reposition the PDP,” he said.

He acknowledged the leadership crisis in the party but assured that the ongoing internal reorganization would restore unity and strength.
Moro stressed that while defections have posed temporary setbacks, they do not signify the end of the PDP. He said, “The PDP is far from collapsing. Our members are dedicated and will rally around the cause. I am confident we will bounce back stronger.”
On his part, Caleb Mutfwang, Plateau state governor praised the commitment of party stakeholders in sustaining democratic values and called for unity ahead of the party’s national convention. He thanked outgoing zonal leaders and urged newly elected officials to uphold the trust placed in them.
Governor Mutfwang also appreciated those who stepped down to allow consensus candidates emerge, describing their actions as noble sacrifices that reflect maturity and loyalty. “You have prioritized the party over personal ambition. This is the spirit that will keep PDP alive and vibrant,” he said.
He encouraged delegates to conduct the voting peacefully, reiterating that the PDP belongs to the people and must remain committed to democratic ideals.
As of press time, vote counting was ongoing following the conclusion of the voting process.
