…convention endorses nationwide congresses
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Saturday dissolved all its existing structures in Imo, Abia, Enugu, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers states, in one of the most far-reaching organisational decisions emerging from its national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State. The announcement, adopted by delegates at the convention, immediately nullifies all ward, local government, and state-level party organs in the affected states.
The motion for dissolution was moved by Seyi Makinde the Oyo State Governor, who told delegates that while the nationwide congresses conducted between 2024 and 2025 were peaceful and met legal and internal requirements, the party had nonetheless resolved to reset its structures in the five states. His proposal was seconded by Daniel Okechukwu, the party’s national auditor and a member of the National Working Committee (NWC), signalling broad leadership support for the move.

Makinde explained that the PDP had carried out congresses across the country to elect new officers at the ward, local government, state, and zonal levels, as well as national ex-officio members. According to him, the processes were conducted in line with the Electoral Act 2022, the PDP constitution, and the party’s internal regulations. He noted that both the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and the NWC had reviewed and approved the outcomes of the congresses.
Despite this validation, Makinde said the party had decided that political realities in Imo, Abia, Enugu, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers required a complete overhaul of their existing structures. Without providing further details on the reasons, he stated that the decision was taken in the interest of strengthening internal cohesion and ensuring uniformity as the PDP recalibrates its political machinery nationwide.
“With regard to Imo, Abia, Enugu, Akwa Ibom and Rivers, the convention hereby dissolves all party structures at the ward, local government and state levels,” Makinde declared to the delegates. He added that the convention had authorised the publication of the decision so that it would serve as a formal notice to the general public and stakeholders within and outside the party.
The announcement drew immediate attention among party members, given that the affected states are traditionally strong PDP bases or battlegrounds with complex political dynamics. The dissolution means that caretaker committees or new transitional arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days to manage party affairs until fresh congresses are organised.
Party leaders at the convention described the broader congress exercise as peaceful and transparent, emphasising that the process represented a renewed commitment to internal democracy. They said the outcome demonstrated the party’s readiness to reposition itself ahead of upcoming electoral cycles.

Saturday’s convention in Ibadan was convened to ratify organisational decisions, review party structures, and strengthen the PDP’s internal framework. With the dissolution now adopted, the party is expected to roll out a fresh timetable and guidelines for restructuring its organs in the affected states.
The convention closed with leaders urging members to remain united as the party works to rebuild, reconcile factions, and reinforce its presence across Nigeria.
