Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has been left out of Sunday’s Premier League clash with Newcastle United following a costly display in the 2-2 draw against Lyon in the Europa League on Thursday.
Recovery for Onana
Club sources confirmed the Cameroon international was omitted from manager Ruben Amorim’s squad to “rest and disconnect” after coming under fire for his form. The decision follows intense criticism, including comments by former United midfielder Nemanja Matic, who labelled Onana “one of the worst goalkeepers” in the club’s history.

Despite the omission, Onana is expected to return for the second leg of the Europa League quarter-final against Lyon at Old Trafford on Thursday and has been reassured the move is not permanent.
Altay Bayindir set for Premier League debut
In Onana’s absence, Turkey international Altay Bayindir is set to start at St. James’ Park. It will be his sixth appearance of the season and his first in the Premier League. Bayindir has been restricted to domestic cup duties since his arrival and last featured in January.
Error-Prone Season Raises Questions
Since joining Manchester United from Inter Milan for £47 million in 2023, Onana has struggled to justify his price tag. The 29-year-old has committed eight errors leading to goals in all competitions since the start of last season — the most by any goalkeeper representing a Premier League club during that period.
His most recent blunder came against Lyon, when he misjudged a routine shot and failed to make a basic save, leading to the French side’s opening goal.
Amorim stands by Onana
Despite the criticism, United boss Ruben Amorim defended Onana after the Lyon match, admitting he had made more mistakes this season than his goalkeeper. The Portuguese tactician emphasised that Onana remains part of his plans and retains his faith.
Off-field troubles add to Onana’s woes
Beyond his on-field struggles, Onana has faced personal challenges off the pitch. Last month, his wife, Melanie Kamayou, was reportedly robbed while leaving a restaurant in Cheshire — an incident that added to the goalkeeper’s turbulent season.
Newcastle also missing Howe
Meanwhile, Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe will also miss Sunday’s game after being admitted to hospital after feeling unwell for several days. Assistant coach Jason Tindall is expected to take charge of the team for the important fixture at St James’ Park.
