Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has identified the sustenance of the unity of Nigeria as the greatest challenge confronting Nigerians.
Obasanjo, who stated this in Umuahia, the Abia State capital recently while speaking at a gala nite organised in his honour by the Abia State government at his visit to the state, noted that it was by design that God brought the various ethnic groups in the country together, and warned that no man should scuttle God’s design.
He noted that it was the responsibility of all Nigerians to ensure that the country remained united.
According to him, the different ethnic groups to which we all belong should not deter us from keeping the challenges ahead of us, as all Nigerians, no matter where they are born or live, should live up to expectation of keeping Nigeria one.
The former president, who drew attention to the various challenges confronting the nation at the moment – insecurity, economic recession, uneven development and disparity – however said what mattered most was the attitude of Nigerians and their reaction to the challenges they had been confronted with.
He acknowledged that whatever achievements he might have made during his military and political career were attributable to the support he received from some Abia sons, pointing out that he would not have had as much success without them.
He appreciated Governor Ikpeazu’s concern for the development of his state and the country, and made it clear that he saw in him signs of greatness and a great future ahead of him.
In his remark, Governor Ikpeazu pledged to continue to do those things that would attract commendation from people as well as to do more in serving the people of the state.
