Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has apologised to Nigerians after Nigeria’s defeat to DR Congo in the CAF play-off final for the 2026 FIFA World Cup ticket.
Nigeria’s World Cup dream ended on Sunday night with a 4–3 penalty shootout loss to DR Congo after a tense 1–1 draw over 120 minutes at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.

Nwabali, who saved one of DR Congo’s spot-kicks but could not prevent the shootout defeat, said the players gave everything for the badge, but admitted their best was not enough on the night.
In a heartfelt Instagram post after the match, Nwabali expressed deep regret to fans.
“Painful! We all did our best for the badge, though our best wasn’t enough. I was once a fan and understand how it feels to give you a disappointing night. We take full responsibility.”

Nwabali’s message comes as the team grapples with another missed World Cup, despite a spirited fight through the playoffs.
Éric Chelle’s men had taken an early lead through Frank Onyeka before DR Congo equalised via Meschack Elia in the 32nd minute. Despite chances at both ends in extra time, neither side could find the winner, forcing another dramatic shootout.
The loss means Nigeria will miss the World Cup for the second consecutive time; their last appearance was at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
